Memorial of Light
How can we look at the landscape to understand it better?
With the process of mapping through film, I explore how a space becomes territory through acts of framing and making it visible. The project presents the Balmeanach Valley on the Isle of Mull, a site managed by one farmer, who with the land, is the main character. By documenting the site and observing him, I realize that there is a work routine with the land that can be traced to explain the functionality of this landscape. With his routine, he inhabits the whole site that is covered by the sun, but there is an unexplored area that is always in the shadows.
How can light be brought to this unused piece of land?
My proposal is to create a structure that can work as a knowledge transfer of his understanding of the land through his work. A teaching method for future generations that immortalises the farmer’s relationship with his land. This structure challenges and works with the constraints and characteristics of its locations.
