FORTRESS

Once one of Nanjing, China’s prominent industrial facilities, the Gypsum & Mine Factory on Shewushan Mountain was abandoned following a major water inrush incident in 2006. As the surrounding area underwent urban development, the site faced the threat of demolition and redevelopment.

Fortress explores an alternative future for this abandoned industrial landscape, investigating the tension between historical preservation and urban transformation. Drawing inspiration from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, the project translates ancient Chinese military strategies into a landscape design approach, using concepts of defence, adaptability, strategic positioning and spatial relationships to reinterpret the site’s industrial heritage.

Through an analysis of the site’s historical significance, surrounding urban development and changing territorial relationships, the project proposes a new way of understanding the abandoned factory—not simply as a relic awaiting demolition, but as a landscape shaped by layers of history, conflict and transformation.
