This architecture thesis aims to study the concept of community football fields, which are tracts of land that were turned into these courts in search for a local scale of sport events in the context of countryside, and to seek ways and methods by which a review and redefinition of these existing land areas can be undertaken in today’s context. The study area is the community football field in Maroni commune, Larnaca district in Cyprus. This site is currently used by the wider area for sporting purposes or some recreational alternative activities, but nevertheless, it largely remains an underutilised area. The general intention of this proposal is to reintegrate these existing courts which are used as community football fields in the context of rural areas and to introduce a way of turning them into hubs between some regions and enriching the lives of the people with recreational and organised / amateur sports activities.
The intervention takes into consideration the sensitive landscape and the existing football field, and its purpose is to propose a new relation and connection between two states, the natural and man-made landscape as the project title indicates (METAIΧΜΙΟ). The infrastructure becomes a new link to the existing situation, blending in with the surrounding landscape not only from an aesthetic point of view but also programmatically with a variety of new and alternative activities for the surrounding area.
